Training

A variety of training is offered by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. Below we have links to the for upcoming in-house training, or we also offer selected training online using the SkillSoft training database. Contact EHS at envsafety@slu.edu for questions regarding which avenue of training may be best for your needs.

Accessing the Saint Louis University Online Training Database (SkillSoft):

  1. 1. Go to http://myslu.slu.edu
  2. 2. In the Tools tab, click on SkillSoft.
  3. 3. If no SkillSoft icon is present, contact the Biosafety Specialist for further instruction.
  4. 4. Click on: Catalog -> SLU Designed Curricula -> Env. Health & Safety -> E-Learnings
  5. 5. Bloodborne Pathogen training (and others) will be in the E-Learnings folder

Training Offered:


Laboratory Safety & Compliance Training

This training is required for all employees, students, volunteers, fellows, teaching assistants and visitors prior to working within a research or teaching laboratory. The areas covered will include general, chemical and biological safety. This training is required prior to working with any hazards and annually thereafter. Click here to view the available dates to attend training and to sign up. Make sure you are logged into your SLU account (e-mail) before attempting to sign up for training.

Bloodborne Pathogen Training

This training is required for all those individuals who may come in contact with human blood or potentially infectious material as a part of their jobs. The refresher training is required annually. Please contact Biosafety Specialist to schedule the training through the SLU Online Trainer. Time: 30-60 minutes

Infectious Material Shippers Training

This training is required for clinical or laboratory employees who package, ship, or receive infectious materials within the University. This training covers the regulatory requirements and is required every two years. Please contact the Biosafety Specialist to schedule the training through the SLU Online Trainer. Time: 30-60 minutes

Radiation Safety Orientation

The Saint Louis University Radiation Safety Committee requires all new users of radioactive materials in research laboratories at Saint Louis University to complete the Radiation Safety Orientation and pass the associated test. The orientation is generally given once a month. Individuals should call the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 977-6896 or e-mail to fergusk2@slu.edu to register. Time: 240-300 minutes (depending on class size)

BSL-3 Facility Awareness Training

Saint Louis University requires all personnel using BSL-3 laboratory facilities to complete initial facility awareness training prior to working in these high containment laboratory areas. The training provides an overview of the facility's safety and security parameters, general facility functionality, and information on worker responsibilities. Refresher training is required annually. Please contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 977-8608 or e-mail at envsafety@slu.edu to register. Time: 60 minutes online, 45-75 minutes live (depending on class size)

ABSL-3 Facility Awareness Training

Saint Louis University requires all personnel using ABSL-3 laboratory facilities to complete initial facility awareness training prior to working in these high containment laboratory areas. The training provides an overview of the facility's safety and security parameters, general facility functionality, and information on worker responsibilities. Select Agent Awareness Training

Saint Louis University requires all personnel working with select agents to have documented Select Agent Awareness Training. The training is required initially, prior to the start of select agent work. In addition, refresher training is required annually for those employees working with Select Agents. The training is provided by the Responsible Official and Alternate Responsible Official (designated under the University's Select Agent Registration with the Department of Health and Human Services). The training can be completed online or provided in a live presentation format (upon request). Immediately following the training is an assessment of the training provided. Sharps Awareness Training

Sharps Awareness is covered dichotomously through the Bloodborne Pathogen Training and through laboratory-specific training provided by the Principal Investigator or Laboratory Manager.

X-Rays (Machine Produced Radiation)

For staff using radiation machines (e.g., X-ray irradiator, fluoroscopy machines) contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 977-8608 or e-mail at envsafety@slu.edu to register.
Time: 30-45 minutes

Laser Safety (Class 3B or 4) Training

For staff using class 3B or 4 lasers go to https://myslu.slu.edu/cp/home/loginf, sign in and click on tools and select the SkillSoft icon. Search for course number SAH0449 entitled Laser Safety Training. If you have difficulty logging in or do not have the SkillSoft icon in your myslu toolkit you may contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 977-8608 or e-mail at envsafety@slu.edu to register. Time: 60 minutes online

Hazard Awareness Training for Support Staff

This training is required annually for support staff including Department of Public Safety and Security Services, Facilities Services and Custodial Services. Please contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 977-8608 or e-mail at envsafety@slu.edu to register. Time: 90 minutes
